The 2023 Headies Award ceremony was rife with memorable moments, but none as touching as MI Abaga’s heartfelt acceptance on behalf of the late music legend, Sound Sultan. 

The Headies, Nigeria’s premier music award show, has always been a platform for celebrating the pinnacle of musical achievement. This year, however, it also became a platform for remembrance and tribute, with Sound Sultan’s posthumous award taking center stage.

At the 16th edition of the award show, which held at Atlanta, US, the deceased received special recognition award and it was presented by Nollywood movie producer, Kunle Afolayan.

Sound Sultan’s contribution to Nigerian music cannot be overstated. He effortlessly blended elements from reggae, hip-hop, and afrobeat, creating anthems that resonated with both young and old. But more than a musician, Sound Sultan was a storyteller, a voice for the masses, highlighting social issues with his poignant lyrics.

The atmosphere at the venue was thick with emotion as his friend and brother, MI Abaga, renowned rapper and producer, took to the stage to receive the award on behalf.

As MI Abaga stepped forward to receive the award on behalf of Sound Sultan, he took a moment to reflect on their shared history, highlighting their collaborations, mutual respect, and the inspiration he drew from the late artist. It was evident to everyone present that this was more than just an award; it was a symbol of the enduring impact of Sound Sultan’s legacy.

MI Abaga made it known that Sound Sultan was a friend and inspiration to all Nigerian musicians.
